A Sanctified Life in Messiah Yeshua
This Rosh Chodesh August 17th 2023 at sunset begins the month of Elul. Traditionally called the month of 30 days of repentance, we prepare for the 10 days of awe (total of 40 days of Sanctification and Repentance) to Yom Kippur.
For those of us who have made Yeshua our Master and Redeemer and are His Talmidim, this is a month of retrospective to examine our hearts and recommit to a sanctified life in Messiah Yeshua.
The Fall Feasts are a time to remember that Yeshua will return, just as He promised in His Word, and we are to be prepared for His return, by living a sanctified, set-apart life and that we will be held accountable when we stand before Yeshua of how we lived our lives in service to Him.
(1Co 3:11 TLV) For no one can lay any other foundation than what is already laid—which is Yeshua the Messiah.
(1Co 3:12 TLV) Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,
(1Co 3:13 TLV) each one’s work will become clear. For the Day will show it, because it is to be revealed by fire; and the fire itself will test each one’s work—what sort it is.
(1Co 3:14 TLV) If anyone’s work built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward.
(1Co 3:15 TLV) If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss—he himself will be saved, but as through fire.
(1Co 3:16 TLV) Don’t you know that you are God’s temple and that the Ruach Elohim dwells among you?
(1Co 3:17 TLV) If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
It is easy to become distracted with daily living and the things of this world, where we let our guard down and allow the flesh to dominate us instead of the Ruach HaKodesh. This season of Teshuva is a time to reflect and repent and commit to living a life of sanctification in Messiah Yeshua as His Talmidim/Disciples.
See our 40 Days of Teshuva Devotional, which addresses these issues.
(Exo 19:10 TLV) Adonai said to Moses, “Go to the people and sanctify them today and tomorrow. Let them wash their clothing.
Hebrew Meaning of Sanctify, Consecrate H6942
קָדַשׁ
qāḏaš: A verb meaning to be set apart, to be holy, to show oneself holy, to be treated as holy, to consecrate, to treat as holy, to dedicate, to be made holy, to declare holy or consecrated, to behave, to act holy, to dedicate oneself. The verb, in the simple stem, declares the act of setting apart, or being holy (i.e., withdrawing someone or something from profane or ordinary use). The Lord set aside Aaron and his sons, consecrated them, and made them holy for the priesthood (Exo_29:21). The altar was made holy, and anything coming into contact with it became holy (Exo_29:37). The Tabernacle, the ark, the table of showbread, the altar of burnt offering, and all the smaller accessories and utensils used in the cult of Israel were anointed with a special anointing oil so they became holy. Whatever came in contact with them became holy (Exo_30:26-29). The men accompanying David as his military were declared holy (1Sa_21:5 [6]).
The word is used most often in the intensive stem, meaning to pronounce or to make holy, to consecrate. The Lord pronounced the Sabbath day holy (Gen_2:3; Exo_20:8). Places could be dedicated as holy, such as a part of the courtyard of the Temple (1Ki_8:64); or Mount Sinai itself (Exo_19:23). The Year of Jubilee, the fiftieth year, was declared holy (Lev_25:10). Persons could be consecrated to holy duties: Aaron and his sons were consecrated to serve as priests of the Lord (Exo_28:3, Exo_28:41; 1Sa_7:1); the firstborn males of people or animals were consecrated to the Lord (Exo_13:2). Holy times were designated using this word in the factitive stem: Jehu deceitfully proclaimed a holy assembly to Baal (2Ki_10:20); a holy fast could be consecrated as Joel did (Joe_1:14). With the Lord as the subject, the word describes establishing something as holy. The Lord Himself consecrated or made holy His people (Exo_31:13; Lev_20:8; Lev_21:8); through His judgments on Israel and the nations, God proved the holiness of His name (Eze_36:23). The priests' holy garments serving in Ezekiel's restored Temple will make those who touch them holy (Eze_44:19; Eze_46:20).
In the causative stem, the meanings overlap with the meanings in the intensive stem. It indicates designating something as consecrated or holy; Jeremiah was declared holy (Jer_1:5); as was the Temple (1Ki_9:3). The word means to treat as holy or dedicated. Gifts, fields, or money could be treated as holy (Lev_27:16; 2Sa_8:11; 2Ki_12:18 [19]). God declared things holy to Himself (1Ki_9:7); God Himself is to be treated as holy (Num_20:12; Num_27:14; Isa_29:23).
In the passive stems, the word means to be consecrated, to be treated as holy, or to show oneself as holy. Ezekiel described the Zadokite priests as consecrated for service at a future Temple (Eze_48:11); Ezr_3:5 described the established holy feasts of the Lord in the return from exile. The entrance at the Tabernacle was to be treated as consecrated and holy through the Lord's glory (Exo_29:43). The Lord showed Himself as holy (Lev_10:3; Lev_22:32; Eze_20:41).
In the reflexive stem, the verb means to show oneself holy or consecrated: the priests had to properly consecrate themselves before coming before the Lord (Exo_19:22; Lev_11:44); the Lord would prove Himself holy before the nations and Israel (Eze_38:23). The word indicates putting oneself or another into a state of holiness to the Lord (Num_11:18; Jos_3:5; 1Sa_16:5; 2Ch_31:18).
(1Pe 3:15 TLV) Instead, sanctify Messiah as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you,
Greek Meaning of Sanctify G37
ἁγιάζω
hagiázō; fut. hagiásō, from hágios (G40), holy. To make holy, sanctify.
(I) To make clean, render pure.
(A) Particularly in Heb_9:13.
(B) Metaphorically, to render clean in a moral sense, to purify, sanctify (Rom_15:16, "being sanctified by the Holy Spirit," meaning by the sanctifying influences of the Holy Spirit on the heart. See 1Co_6:11; Eph_5:26; 1Th_5:23; 1Ti_4:5; Heb_2:11; Heb_10:10, Heb_10:14, Heb_10:29; Heb_13:12; Rev_22:11). Hoi hēgiasménoi, those who are sanctified, is a reference to Christians in general (Act_20:32; Act_26:18; 1Co_1:2; Jud_1:1). In 1Co_7:14, the perf. tense hēgíastai, has been sanctified, refers to an unbelieving husband or wife who is sanctified by a believing spouse. The word "sanctification" here should not be construed to mean salvation. The unbelieving partner is set apart on account of the believing partner. The unbeliever comes under a special and direct spiritual influence and benefits from divine favor in the life of the believer. As long as there is contact, there is hope that the unbeliever will turn to faith in Jesus Christ. The point of the passage is that in such a marriage the believer is not defiled by the unbeliever, rather the unbeliever is sanctified by the believer.
(II) To consecrate, devote, set apart from a common to a sacred use since in the Jewish ritual, this was one great object of the purifications.
(A) Spoken of things (Mat_23:17; Mat_23:19; 2Ti_2:21; Sept.: Lev_8:10 f., Lev_8:30).
(B) Spoken of persons, to consecrate as being set apart of God and sent by Him for the performance of His will (Joh_10:36, "whom the father hath sanctified, and sent into the world"; Joh_17:17, "Sanctify them through [or in the promulgation of] thy truth" [cf. Joh_17:18-19]).
(III) To regard and venerate as holy, to hallow (Mat_6:9; Luk_11:2; 1Pe_3:15; Sept.: Isa_8:13; Isa_10:17; Isa_29:23). Thus the verb hagiázō, to sanctify, when its object is something that is filthy or common, can only be accomplished by separation (aphorízō [G873]) or withdrawal. It also refers to the withdrawal from fellowship with the world and selfishness by gaining fellowship with God.
Deriv.: hagiasmós (G38), sanctification.
What it Means to Be Sancfied
Reminders:
(1Co 6:11 TLV) That is what some of you were—but you were washed, you were made holy, you were set right in the name of the Lord Yeshua the Messiah and by the Ruach of our God.
(Eph 5:25 TLV) Husbands, love your wives just as Messiah also loved His community and gave Himself up for her
(Eph 5:26 TLV) to make her holy, having cleansed her by immersion in the word.
(1Th 5:23 AMP+) Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [that is, separate you from profane and vulgar things, make you pure and whole and undamaged--consecrated to Him--set apart for His purpose]; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete and [be found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ/Yeshua HaMashiach.
(Heb 2:11 AMP+) Both Jesus/Yeshua who sanctifies and those who are sanctified [that is, spiritually transformed, made holy, and set apart for God's purpose] are all from one Father; for this reason He is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters,
(Heb 10:10 AMP+) And in accordance with this will [of God] we [who believe in the message of salvation] have been sanctified [that is, set apart as holy for God and His purposes] through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) once for all.\
(Heb 10:14 AMP+) For by the one offering He has perfected forever and completely cleansed those who are being sanctified [bringing each believer to spiritual completion and maturity].
(Heb 10:29 AMP+) How much greater punishment do you think he will deserve who has rejected and trampled under foot the Son of God, and has considered unclean and common the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and has insulted the Spirit of grace [who imparts the unmerited favor and blessing of God]? [Exo_24:8]
(Heb 13:12 AMP+) Therefore Jesus/Yeshua also suffered and died outside the [city] gate so that He might sanctify and set apart for God as holy the people [who believe] through [the shedding of] His own blood.
Sanctification produces the Fruit of the Ruach HaKodesh in our lives. A sanctified life has nothing to do with the deeds/works of the flesh!
(Gal 5:16 TLV) But I say, walk by the Ruach, and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh.
(Gal 5:17 TLV) For the flesh sets its desire against the Ruach, but the Ruach sets its desire against the flesh—for these are in opposition to one another, so that you cannot do what you want.
(Gal 5:18 TLV) But if you are led by the Ruach, you are not under law.
(Gal 5:19 TLV) Now the deeds of the flesh are clear: sexual immorality, impurity, indecency,
(Gal 5:20 TLV) idolatry, witchcraft, hostility, strife, jealousy, rage, selfish ambition, dissension, factions,
(Gal 5:21 TLV) envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, just as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit God’s kingdom.
(Gal 5:22 TLV) But the fruit of the Ruach is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
(Gal 5:23 TLV) gentleness, and self-control—against such things there is no law.
(Gal 5:24 TLV) Now those who belong to Messiah have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
(Gal 5:25 TLV) If we live by the Ruach, let us also walk by the Ruach.
(Gal 5:26 TLV) Let us not become conceited—provoking one another, envying one another.
We need to allow the Ruach HaKodesh to shine His light upon our hearts so He can create a clean heart within us.
(Psa 51:1 TLV) For the music director: a psalm of David,
(Psa 51:2 TLV) when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he went to Bathsheba.
(Psa 51:3 TLV) Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your mercy. According to Your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
(Psa 51:4 TLV) Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
(Psa 51:5 TLV) For I know my transgressions and my sin is ever before me.
(Psa 51:6 TLV) Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You are just when You speak, and blameless when You judge.
(Psa 51:7 TLV) Behold, I was born in iniquity and in sin when my mother conceived me.
(Psa 51:8 TLV) Surely You desire truth in the inner being. Make me know wisdom inwardly.
(Psa 51:9 TLV) Cleanse me with hyssop and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
(Psa 51:10 TLV) Let me hear joy and gladness, so the bones You crushed may rejoice.
(Psa 51:11 TLV) Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
(Psa 51:12 TLV) Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
(Psa 51:13 TLV) Do not cast me from Your presence—take not Your Ruach ha-Kodesh from me.
(Psa 51:14 TLV) Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit.
(Psa 51:15 TLV) Then will I teach transgressors Your ways and sinners will return to You.
(Psa 51:16 TLV) Deliver me from bloodguilt, O God—God of my salvation. Then my tongue will sing for joy of Your righteousness.
(Psa 51:17 TLV) O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.
(Psa 51:18 TLV) For You would not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it, nor be pleased by burnt offerings.
(Psa 51:19 TLV) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
(Psa 51:20 TLV) In Your favor do good to Zion. Build up the walls of Jerusalem.
(Psa 51:21 TLV) Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices and whole burnt offerings. Then bulls will be offered on Your altar.
